Technology News

Since the consumer electronics show in January there has been lots of exciting news in technology. This week I would like you to find an interesting article and post a link to it here, along with your thoughts about the article (what it is about and what you think about it) then read an article posted by someone else and comment on it. I found several articles about new gadgets and tools, so you have lots to choose from!

I find this article intresting because it shows an expanded use of something that is not brand new technology, but a platform that will be useable on brand new technology. The I series of devices, (ipod touch, iphone and soon to be ipad) are remarkably taking over as being used in buisness, a market that even 2 years ago was almost completely PC dominated. Mobile devices that were windows mobile played an intresting role in the workplace but things like the Iphone were more just for checking email. Now we see a whole new platform, With the ipod and iphone SDK (Service Doveleper Kit), Companies can program for the iphone and ipod, as well as ipad in the near future. Recently Apple themselves have started using this technology. Your checked out using an ipod touch with a custom back, an intresting device we could start to see in more buisnesses.

This is so interesting. I’m surprised that something like that happened. You would think that with all the new security and gadgets that the FBI and other corporations have today, something like this shouldn’t have happened. But it did. I wonder if the banks and other corporations really checked the security of the computers they were using. It seems to me that they weren’t. Let this be a lesson to everyone that they should be more careful and nothing is always as it seems.

This was a very interesting article about the IPad. It discusses the good and the bad things about it. It says how it was so anticipated by everyone, now everyone is bashing it and then when it comes out it will be great. Someone mentioned how that happened with the Iphone too. I have heard a lot about the IPad and how much of a disappointment it is going to be but after reading this I now have high hopes for it, even though it doesn’t sound ideal for anyone who moves a lot.
Towards Grahams, I agree with how Ipods and other devices are being somehow added to everything and I find it very strange that like you said 2 years ago it was almost completely PCs’. The IPod and other things that are more common are more helpful because they can do so much more at a time and things like that.

PatrickO F Period said...

I think that apple has come along with its technology because with all of their new devices coming out, another one usually follows. With the Nano version of the IPod it seems as if there is never going to be a last generation they have made like 3 generations in just a couple years and now they’re coming out with the Ipad and that may have more advanced versions of itself as well. I also agree with Grahams post at how the security is not very strict and is easily bypassed.

Technology Article
I think that this article is interesting because some people in college have created a device that can wirelessly charge an electronic device. I think this is interesting because it can stop the use of batteries forever. In theory if everyone owned one of these devices then they would no longer have the need to use batteries which would in return put a lot of businesses out of business such as Energizer. I think that this invention is cool, because something as small as a way to charge a T.V. controller can change the way we power things for the rest of our lives.

I had no idea that facebook could target people for advertising. If you change your relationship to engaged, you will suddenly get advertisement on wedding photos, cakes, etc. That’s crazy to me. It seems like an advertisers dream come true. Especially since facebook is extremely popular. It did seem a little creepy to me though because facebook and advertisers knew my interests. I think this would be a huge plus but I know that I never actually click on any advertisements on facebook. I’ve had way too many viruses on my computer so I never click on any advertisement no matter what the quality of it is or how tempting it may be. I think this is true for most people.

_I agree with Graham W. Comment that apple is taking over most businesses. It’s unbelievable that apple is dominating and so incredibly popular

This article is about botnets. botnets are used to infect millions of computers and you may not even notice it happening. Three men were arrested recently for being the alleged leaders of the notorious Mariposa botnet. they infiltrated an estimate 12.7 million computers. the scary part about this is that the experts interviewed in this article say that if Mariposa had stayed smaller than they probably wouldnt have been noticed.

I think that the Iphone is heading in a very positive direction. Phones nowadays are leading away from just being able to call different people. Cell phones are no longer phones; they are mobile working and playing devices. Also, this is just going to continues to grow, cell phones will become better and better in time and I would not be surprised if they start to replace more than just home phones.
The article that I pasted is about a device made by LG that is both a watch and a phone. Although this might seem corny it is defiantly a step in the right direction. Technology companies are frantically coming up with new idea to make things easier and to make life better, and if the current trend of new technologies keeps up I can see a lot of very interesting inventions in our near future!

Having it incorporated in a business and have it be really helpful seems like something that never could have happened a couple years ago. It makes you wonder how much more advanced technology will become in the next 10 years.

I think its just amazing how far technology has come. After talking with my parents they think my cell phone is high tech even though it is the most basic setup. But what gets to me as far as technology goes is what the iphones do. You can do almost anything you can do on a computer on it. E-mail, GPS, Internet, Games, Download music, evrything, and also using it as a phone too.

Nuclear batteries are batteries that are built for a long lasting source of energy. these batteries could potentially last months with out having to charge them, that would be great to not have to charge your cell phone or labtop for months. The batteries were made at the University of Missouri and are about the size of a penny. I think that these batteries could be very useful and used a lot in the future.

http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20527505.300-the-selfcharging-cellphone.html This article is about how Nokia of Finland has come up with an idea to make a self-charging cellphone. The cellphone would be constructed in such a way that if the cellphone was moved, the motion would generate electricity inside the phone which would charge it. I think this is a really good idea and would be benefical to cellphone users. I personally always forget to charge my cellphone and hate when I actually have to use my phone and the battery is dead. Having a self charging phone would prevent this from ever happening. I read Blake C's blog about the new apple ipad and it sounded very interesting. I hadn't heard about the Ipad before and it sounds like a very advanced form of technology.

I think it's cool that they can be entertained when they can't do anything else though. also they shouldn't be playing around on the computer they should be with there families and friends living the last of there days with there loved ones. http://paulstamatiou.com/nike-plus-an-ipod-shoe
It was unbelievable to me in 2001 the invention of the iPods and how they have continued to advance up until now. However, the new invention of Nike and iPod joining together to make a shoe is amazing. I believe today the technology advances are a lot about convenience for the buyers and consumers, and any product that requires less work and energy we will take. This combination is very curious to especially runners who have an iPod bouncing on their arm or in their pockets because they will no longer have to touch it to change the song on their runs. While running, there is a wireless pedometer that is tracked by the iPod which records running pace along with other factors of your workout. How we all run with iPods, if we don’t like a song we have to look at the screen to change it, but with this shoe when you wish to speed up or slow down the pace of your run, the iPod changes the song for you to a song you have previously selected. At the same time, your speed and pace of running is stated to you through your earphones to keep you aware of slowing down or speeding up. After your workout, your stats are accessible online to find your progress.

I think Kelsey’s article is interesting because it’s true we tend to ignore but are aware of the advertisements on the sides of our Facebook’s. However, not many of us notice the advertisements are personal to our interests which is odd that an electronic device can know that much about you in the first place. It is amazing that technology has come so far that we do not need a human to distinguish who we are or what we like to do as a person, but it also frightens me that too many of us do not think about the consequences of that.

I think this is really cool. It is a great way to target audiences - basically an advertisers dream. Some of the stuff seems a little weird - wedding cakes, rings, etc on the side of a persons page after they change their relationship status seems a little creepy. I think overall this is a useful tool for advertisers.

I found this article interesting because I had never truly thought that something of this nature could be invented. I can see multiple reasons why soundless communication could be useful, and I think the concept is really interesting. In the article they mention that this could potentially allow the speech-impaired to speak again. That seems a lot more important than use with cell phones. The only down side I can see is that you have to wear sensors on your face, and there’s always the possibility that they could misread your facial movements. Other than that, I think this has potential to be a ground-breaking technological advancement.

In response to Nathan C., I agree that the iPad looks very useful and is a new height for Apple. I think they could prove very useful to large businesses as well as everyday people.

I chose this article because I think it is just another example of the progression our culture has grown with technology. Not even 10 years ago, almost no one had a cell phone. And now there is a self-powering mobile device? I have a cell phone and as convenient as they are, it would be even more so convenient to have it charge itself. I'm curious as to if this new invention will actually take off or remain a "working progress"

I found this article on prosthetic limbs that use the remaining nerves in the amputated limb instead of remaining muscles. Old presthetic limbs are slow and difficult to move, only capable of one movement at a time. This technology will be very helpful to those people who have lost limbs in wars or mechanical accidents in helping them get back to work.

Rapid rises in Cell phones for children ages 6-11 is right. As a person who got a cell-phone for emergencies I find it astounding that there are people under the age of 12 that “just have to have the latest cells just to text their friends during school and in the middle of class.” And yes that is said in the stereotypical prep voice. As a percentage the populations of children that are 6-11 in years that have cell-phones are girls but the percentage has jumped from 11.9% in 2005 to 20.0% in 2009. I find it wrong that a 6 year old has a cell-phone that they could possibly call some person that would not be so nice for the parent or the child.

I find this article to be extremely interesting because it is a different kind of technology that is just as important. It is truly amazing to see how far people have come with the development of prosthetics because what they have now made life for amputees almost the same to how their life was before. With this special technology, say an arm was lost, the brain tells the nerves to move the arm, and the prosthetic arm moves. Now, with these devices, it communicates with the nerves which allow blind people to see, deaf people to hear and people with missing appendages to move freely. This ensures the patients during a tragic time in their life that they can soon return to normal.

In response to Cassie B. I agree that the invention would be put to a better use if they went the path of the speech impaired rather than the cell phone. With the speech impaired I don’t believe many would have a problem with the electrodes.

The idea of creating “hybrid” cell phones is a really cool idea and a great way to reduce dependence on electricity! I’m really excited by this one and feel it could become very popular. The hydrogen fuel cell would be the backup power source though, not the main one. However, it gives the equivalent of 3-5 recharges of a traditional battery, which is extremely convenient and people will love.
Graham, it seems the rate things are changing, it is incredibly unpredictable to see what technology businesses will adopt next. It is quite interesting to see that they keep up and take advantage of these tools because they really can make a business run much more efficiently.

Cloud Computing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QJncFirhjPg
This video is kind of long and boring, but it explains the benefits of cloud computing very well. It focuses on the business benefits to cloud computing.
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123802623665542725.html This article talks about how many commonly used web sites like Facebook, Yahoo, and Amazon are using cloud computing to store their data.
Cloud computing is using someone else’s hardware, though the internet, to host services like webpages and e-mail. Cloud Computing is cheap and fast for businesses. You can get more space on a server instantly, instead of having to buy hardware to increase capacity. Another benefit to cloud storage is it is an offsite back up for your data.
There are drawbacks to cloud computing, companies could export the servers to other countries for cheap labor. Also, if one of these servers went down, none of the people that rely on that sever would have access to their data. Despite these problems I think cloud computing could be the future of computing and data storage for business and universities.

The article that I chose primarily focuses on the latest ASUS notebooks (laptops). I found this to be particularly interesting because one model showcased, was made of a considerable amount of bamboo, which is environmentally friendly. I feel that if people really got on board with this notebook model, it could be a wonderful step in the right direction. It actually surprised me that we could incorporate natural and renewable materials, into technology, because I had never heard of that before now. This model displays that we can continue to advance in technology, without damaging the environment. We simply need the motivation.

This is an interesting article about the experimental Google Reader Play project. This project seems interesting to me because it may be a new way to find things that I would like on the internet. Since browsing the internet is so haphazardly this Google reader would identify the types of things you would like to look at, and then display them with a large image on your screen. This would make it easy to sort through images and see what you want to learn more about at the moment.

In response to Austin's article, I believe that these discoveries, like a wireless charger, are amazing. However we do need to consider the effects on other companys, and in an economy that is already struggling, we need to think about how eventhough new jobs could be created in these technology fields, many others would be lost. But there are also environmnetal enhancements to be noticed, because there would be less chargers thrown away and produced with phones, because wireless chargers could work with all phones. This advancement's positives seem to outweigh it's negatives.

I thought that this eco-friendly phone charger from AT&T was an interesting idea. It is called the AT&T Zero Charger. Basically, it senses when your cell phone isn’t connected to the charger and cuts the power supply from the wall socket. When you have your cell phone charger plugged into the wall, it continues to draw power from the power grid, even when your cell phone isn't attached to the other end. I always have my cell phone charger plugged into the wall, even when I am not charging my cell phone. I never knew it wasted electricity. I thought that this was a good invention for a number of reasons. First of all, it is a small change that people can make to be more environmentally conscious. It is also compatible with many types of cell phones, so you don't need to get a new charger each time you purchase a new phone and throw away your old one.

I think that Facebook is a intersting site, because you can do a lot of different things. I like how you can keep in touch with all your friends. Even people that live far away. A lot of people use it. The bad thing is that people get addicted to facebook. Also a lot of people that you don't know know about your personal life. The pictures that you put up show parts of your life that you may not want everyone to see. Once a photo's online it never goes away. People get involved with that by just looking at them.
